The Thailand
Experience (22nd December - 27th December 2002)
|

|
We depart from the UK on the 22nd
December 2002 and the entire UK contingent will spend the first
few days in Thailand at the Ambassador City Hotel in Jontiem
(left). We will spend the time acclimatizing and experiencing
some of Thailand's culture. This will involve sightseeing in
Bangkok to get a taste of Thailand. During this period apart from
seeing some of Thailand's sights we will be holding a large
surprise Christmas Party. After this we move onto the Jamboree
Site for the opening ceremony. |

The Jamboree (28th
December 2002 - 7th January 2003) |
|

|
The Jamboree will be held near Sattahip (150km
South from Bangkok) on land loaned from the Thai Navy. The
campsite is designed in the shape of a bicycle. There are two
"villages" in each wheel, named after oceans. Each
village contains 6 sub camps named after seas. There are 25
Troops like our unit in each one. The Jamboree will give
participants a chance to meet Scouts from all around the world
and to learn about different cultures.
The Jamboree begins with opening ceremonies in
the sub camps followed by the main opening ceremony for all
participants. This will involve a flag parade and the official
opening of the Jamboree. New Year's Eve will be celebrated every
hour as different countries around the world reach midnight. On
new Year's Day individual religions will hold ceremonies followed
by an inter religious ceremony afterwards.
|
|
On the Jamboree Site there will be
several activity areas that aim to teach awareness about world issues.
The Global Development Village provides
activities relating to global issues of health, environment, peace and human
rights. This is to provide an understanding of issues and to learn the skills
and motivation to deal with them.
Crossroads of Culture introduces Scouts
to different cultures and gives them a chance to meet new people and gain
appreciation for a different society.
The City of Science relates to
scientific and technical breakthroughs to give people a better understanding and
appreciation of the benefits of technology.
|
Face the waves is a half day activity spent on
the sea that borders the Jamboree site. This will include
rafting, sailing, snorkelling, windsurfing and beach sports being
some activities. This gives a chance to see marine life as well
as enjoying some water sports.
Our Heritage is a full day activity examining
parts of Thai culture. It will involve a visit to a relevant
place. The areas include agricultural, natural, industrial,
cultural and Scouts, each looking at their involvement in Thai
life.
|

|
Community Action day is a full day visit to the
local community to help build a local facility which will be of
use to the local community.
Exploring Nature consists of a full day off site
examining natural ecosystems around the site through a series of
nature trails.
During the Jamboree units can take part in
Tournaments such as Outdoor Skills, Challenge Valley (Obstacle
Course), Fun and Games and Scale the Heights.
In Free Time there are many activities being laid
on including Thai Games, Mountain Biking and Swimming in the sea.
The final closing ceremony will take place after
the closing ceremonies in each of the sub camps. There will be a
flag parade as well as a renewal of the Scout promise. The World
Scout Flag will be handed over to the United Kingdom who will
invite all Scouts to the 21st World Scout Jamboree in the UK in
2007.

|
Home Hospitality (8th
January - 11th January 2003) |
|

|
After the main Jamboree, 3 days will be spent
experiencing Home Hospitality (Ho Ho) in Malaysia. The contingent
will be split into pairs who will
each live with the family of a Malaysian Scout.
|
|
Other members of
the UK contingent will visit Japan, Taiwan, The Philippines,
Singapore and Korea. Ho Ho gives Scouts a chance to experience
the ordinary lives of other Scouts on the other side of the world
as well as do some sight seeing. |
|

|
|
We return to the UK on Sunday 12th January 2003
to recover from the Jet Lag and to get used to the less
hospitable weather. |
