Preparation25/02/05 ROUTE PLANNING AND GAMES The early part of the evening was spent writing the route plan for the hike and playing the occasional game. This built on the information the Scouts had picked up during Friday nights in September and October 2004 but this was the first time they had planned a route, so they worked out for each leg of the route (with encouragement): what the six-figure grid references were; what the timings were (based on two elements: distance; and Naismith's rule for height gain); what the compass bearings were; and what the terrain looked like. This planning phase was witnessed by the District Commissioner - Bob Bushell - who was paying the Troop a courtesy visit. Not that the lads were under any pressure, of course! At around 2130 hrs, all bedding was laid out in the hall and the Scouts finalised preparations for the hike - checking their kit and making sure they had everything they needed, including map, compass and route plan. Finally, at 2200 hrs, we all set off in Nobby (the Group minibus) for Peaslake. This section is awaiting reports from the Scouts to go with the pictures - so hurry up and get them to me, lads - I'm sure everyone wants to hear how it went! (From your point of view rather than the Leaders', that is - and apart from seeing it in pictures...) Of course, it was then back to the Scout Hut and straight to bed - at around 0245 hrs. For some strange reason, none of the Scouts wanted a hot drink (do they ever?!) and they went down almost without a peep. Made the Leaders uneasy, wondering what they were up to. But, no, they were as good as gold and it wasn't long before the Leaders turned in. 26/02/05 BREAKFAST - NEARLY IN BED Roger was first up at around 0700 hrs and set about pulling breakfast together. Dave made it out of bed just short of 0800 hrs and, well, drank Coffee made for him by Roger - what a star! The Scouts finally started stirring at 0830 hrs: wouldn't you with Roger screaming "Rise and shine!" from the doorway? (Glad I was up under my own steam!) So, after a hearty breakfast of hot dogs and baked beans, it was time to pack up and go home - or off to work, depending on who you were. The last of us left the Hut at 0945 hrs, tired but happy after a great night. Scout/Parent Comments
