Fire lighting

  1. Collect very small twigs to use as kindling. There must be a very large amount of these and they must be dry.

  2. Make sure you have adequate reserves of larger sticks and logs to prevent panic once fire is lit, you have burnt all your kindling and there is no more fuel!

  3. Arrange the kindling twigs in a rough wigwam effect with a small hole to stick the match in facing towards the wind (if there is some).

  4. Arrange slightly larger twigs on top of the current wigwam until it is of a reasonable size.

  5. Light it. Try to keep the match out of the wind. It helps.

  6. Blow gently through the hole to get the fire going. (If there is wind it may well do it for you provided it can get to your fire!)

  7. Once it has got going put on larger and larger twigs and logs until it is roaring. Simple!
