1st Unit Meeting, Wallington - 16th September 2001

This afternoon meeting was the first time all the participants from all over the County met to be given a briefing on exactly what the Jamboree was and to meet the rest of the unit we would be going to Thailand with. We were given our Jamboree scarves as well as our folders, which contained helpful tips and advice for the Jamboree and would soon be full of all sorts of additional information. We were shown some of the pictures of the GLSW unit at the 1999 Chilean Jamboree and then discussed the main details about the Jamboree. There was also an activity to give us a chance to meet the other members of the unit.

Weekend Camp, Polyapes - 2nd - 4th November 2001

The main aim of this camp was to give us a chance to get to know everyone. We had lots of free time as well as team building challenges to get us working together better. These included shaving balloons, standing on small pieces of paper and cooking omlettes. We also had our tent being taken down in the night with us in it, whether that was part of the teambuilding or not.

Bowling, Croydon - 13th January 2002

We spent this Sunday afternoon at another social event to get to know everyone a little better and to wish everyone a Happy New Year as in a years time we would be in Thailand. It also gave us a chance to get use to being beaten at a sporting event.

Skills Day, Morden - 17th February 2002

The skills day mainly revolved around our ability to cook something whilst in Thailand. At this point it appeared we would be cooking on charcoal (we now know it's gas) and we had an interesting attempt to cook lunch, which actually turned out rather well suprisingly! Also on the programme was designing the gate to our campsite as well as brainstorming the design of our unit shirt. The day also provided us with a chance to put forward proposals for our unit Code of Conduct.

Weekend Camp, Birchmere Campsite - 16th - 17th March 2002

Another weekend camp to get used to each other once more. We practised our unit songs and built 'Flintstone Cars' before taking to the woods that evening. The County Night Hike took place the same evening and the several hundred people camping on the field had turned it to mud. We eventually arrived back late that night very wet and caked in mud. The next morning we attempted to run a Royal Park and infected the USA with Foot and Mouth, bankrupted the park and killed off all the trees (fortunately it was just a game) before heading home in the afternoon.

Weekend Camp, Frylands Wood - 6th - 7th July 2002

During this camp we were split into the crews we would be in for the Jamboree and set about putting up our dining shelters. During the camp we practised building a table for the Jamboree, navigating the assault course blindfolded, researching customs and traditions of Thailand and Malaysia as well as receiving a talk on hygiene from Simon, which was not that effective, judging by the preparations for lunch.

Weekend Camp, Downe - 28th - 29th September 2002

The last of our weekend camps gave us a chance to practise travelling as a Unit. We travelled .over to Downe campsite in Kent using trains, the underground and buses. During the camp .we were able to have some light hearted fun playing football, grass sledging, climbing and .abseiling and undercooking chicken. It was probably not quite as amusing for the locals who .had the forty of us crammed onto a single decker bus with them.

D-Day, Wallington - 17th November 2002

The UK Jamboree equipment we ordered back in March had finally been delivered and was ready to be picked up. This included our UK Jamboree bags as well as our fleeces, uniform, shoes, hats, sun cream, sunglasses to mention just a few of the items. We were also given yet more information regarding travelling and security as well as the Jamboree song. Then just as we were leaving we were roped into folding up hundreds of tickets for the raffle to take place shortly after.

Christmas Party, New Malden - 8th December 2002

Our Christmas Party was fortunately held just around the corner in New Malden. It was the last chance for the whole unit to get together before we left. We were given the latest reports on the security situation ( Home Hospitality in the Philippines was cancelled due to the risk) followed by advice on the best way to pack and what not to bring by Simon and Roy. We then were given Lucy's advice on how to stay safe in the sun - words that any member of the unit can now recite instantly - as well as general health advice for when we were out there. We were also shown our finalised itinerary, so we knew for the first time exactly what we were doing when. With the formal matters over all that was left was to relax and sample the mince pies provided.
